研究実績の概要

This research studies indigenous social work internationally. Indigenous people like the Ainu in Japan face various social problems.
The purpose of the research is to examine and compare the historical and theoretical evolution of indigenous knowledge-based models of social work around the globe. To achieve the research objective, data collection focuses on two areas: (1) historical development of indigenous social work models, especially their introduction; and (2) theoretical development of indigenous social work models, especially indigenous knowledge-based theories.
The main method for data collection is a cyclic dialogue between literature survey and field survey. Literature survey before field entry is concerned with already existing information and an initial review was carried out in the first year.
Papers on the subject were presented in domestic journals ('Social Worker' by the Japanese Association of Social Workers and the 'Journal of Social Policy and Social Work' by the Japan College of Social Work) and at international conferences (the 25th Asia Pacific Joint Regional Social Work Conference and the 5th Asia Future Conference), including the co-organization of a pre-conference workshop on 'Indigeneity in Asia and Pacific Social Work' and preparations for a co-authored book on 'Indigeneity and Indigenisation in Asia Pacific Social Work' as member of an international team of researchers on the subject. These professional relationships will be utilized for future field surveys.

理由

The main reason for the delay is the COVID-19 pandemic. International field surveys that were planned for the end of the previous academic year as well as conference attendance scheduled for the current semester have to be rescheduled for further dates.
With regard to the former, late summer of 2020 and early spring of 2021 can be considered as probable alternatives according to the global status of the pandemic. As for the latter, rescheduled dates in late autumn of 2020 and on-line conferences have the potential to provide a solution.

今後の研究の推進方策

Future plans include working together with the a team of researchers on the above metnioned co-authored international publication on the subject, participating in relevant conferences and conducting field surveys internationally.
Scheduled international conferences include one online conference in July and a rescheduled conference in November, both with panels and/or sessions on indigenous social work.
Planned international field surveys consist of visits to and interviews at relevant agencies. As soon as the global situation of COVID-19 allows, field surveys on Asian and European models of indigenous social work are to be coordinated with local key persons in target countries.
Inquiry into indigenous social work in Japan is to taking place with a special focus on the metropolitan Ainu community in form of contribution to the international book project.
