With this grant, we have written several milestone papers that pave the path for future research directions. We have completed observations on the CLAMATO project, which has pioneered 3D tomography of the intergalactic medium (IGM) gas traced by the Lyman-alpha forest in the COSMOS field. We then applied novel dynamical density reconstruction techniques to reveal the 3D cosmic web for the first time at the z>2 epoch.
In a separate effort, we developed new density reconstruction and constrained realization techniques to be applied to galaxy spectroscopic surveys, and applied it to existing spectroscopic data in the COSMOS field at 2<z<2.5. This revealed a new population of galaxy protoclusters in the volume, and also allowed us to track the 'future' evolution of these protoclusters to their fate at z=0.
Finally, by combining the CLAMATO IGM tomography data and the new protoclusters discovered by the COSTCO project, we have discovered a protocluster at z=2.3 in which the surrounding gas appears to be heated compared to the standard IGM. This might be an indication that long-range AGN activity is driving early formation of the warm-hot intergalactic medium already at this epoch. All these results will drive future research with the Subaru PFS facility.
