In the final year of the project, efficient single photon emission from Gallium Nitride quantum dots in bullseye structures was successfully realized for the first time. Following the work from last year (in which ensemble emission from several quantum dots was shown to be greatly enhanced), Several isolated quantum dots in bullseye structures where detected and measured to exhibit single photon emission. Analysis (involving a thorough calibration of the throughput/losses due to the relevant components of the optical micro-photoluminescence setup) revealed that the bullseye structures fabricated for this study can enhance the photon emission rate far above the limit for as-grown quantum dots, showing clearly the successful operation of the designed structures. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that a top-down nano-photonic structure has been fabricated and used for enhance the emission from self-assembled Gallium Nitride quantum dots. The results represent the brightest single photon emission from single GaN quantum dots recorded to date, and therefore serve as a new milestone for III-nitride photonics/nanotechnology. A comprehensive paper on this work was published in ACS Photonics, and was selected for the cover image of the journal.
