Studies this year were done on two components of the study: the effect of the corona on nanoplastics and their ability to interact with biological matter and the colonization of microbes on environmental plastics. This is in addition to the continual analyses of environmental plastics and their degradation state.
In general, Raman imaging indicated that nanoplastics of varying functionality would agglomerate around yeast cells. This was however ameliorated by the presence of humic acid. It is believed then that the humic acid may be causing the nanoplastics to be removed from the matrix (i.e. is causing instability in the nanoplastic colloid mixture or through corona formation). In addition, further environmental analyses were conducted, with a greater focus on the plastic structure and the microbial community differences between microbes found on plastic surfaces and in the surrounding environment. Differences were observed between the microbes found on plastics and the surrounding water. Furthermore, plastics in the environment were observed to be more crystalline and oxidized, which may play a role in the extent to which microbial colonies form.
