研究実績の概要 |
The first year of this project focused on three limited case studies: stone technology used in Japanese castle architecture; the employment of birds' feathers on armor surcoats (jinbaori); and representations of Portuguese foreigners in festival depictions (matsuri-zu). The overarching questions about the role of Japan in the larger context of the so-called "first Globalization" and the complex migration of ideas, individuals, and objects could be approached in a much more integrated and differentiated way. A number of field trips (Tokyo, Atami, Kyoto, Yamaguchi, Hizen Nagoya, Seoul) was undertaken and contacts with leading specialists working in relevant fields were established. The direct investigation of relevant art works, archival materials, and items of material culture such as armor surcoats proved as being of fundamental importance. At the beginning of the project year, necessary equipment (books, computers) was purchased and a collection of photographic materials and metadata was undertaken in preparation for research and the creation of an open-access databank. Consultations with an IT specialist about the ideal configuration of the projected image and research data bank have begun and will lead to specific recommendations for the implementation.

理由
A number of research trips and presentations of preliminary research results to relevant colleagues in Japan, China, and the USA have been conducted. The on-sight experience and feedback from colleagues have largely aided the establishment of reliable empirical and quantitative research, one of the key points of this project. At this point, the planning for the second-year workshop "The Forgotten Legacy: Japan's Material Culture of the Global Age Reconsidered" (November 30, 2019) has far advanced. A project meeting with the members of another, related research project (the Azuchi screen research initiative, based in Osaka and Melbourne) has largely helped in clarifying basic assumptions and sharpening the focus of this project. The development of the databank "Q-MC" is proceeding according to plan.
