研究実績の概要 |
During this year I have achieved my goals. I have conducted archival research on Nabeyama Sadachika, Yabe Teiji, and Koyama Iwao. To do this, I collected journal articles from various libraries (especially Waseda University and the National Diet Library). I also spent time at the Graduate Reasearch Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), where I read Yabe Teiji’s papers. My major achievement has been an article on Nabeyama Sadachika (“What is Left of the Right: Nabeyama Sadachika and Anti-Communism in Transwar Japan”)submitted to the Journal of Asian Studies, the foremost English-language journal in the field. It has been accepted and will appear in mid-2020.I also presented my work in progress at various scholarly gatherings. These included the Asian Studies Conference Japan (Tokyo), and the Association for Asian Studies (Washington). Overall, this initial year has led a solid base to develop my research project into a book manuscript.

1: 当初の計画以上に進展している
理由
Besides the original research on Nabeyama Sadachika, Yabe Teiji, and Koyama Iwao, I also conducted research on another individual that, I realised, was key to the project: Yatsugi Kazuo. I found material in several locations, including the Kensei shiryoshitsu.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The major goal for the next year is to work on a special issue of the journal Modern Asian Studies. This issue, on which I collaborate with Max Ward (Middlebury College), will examine anew the history of various Asian countries from the 1930s to the 1960s. Scholars working on Indonesia, Korea, and Taiwan will be invited to join. Also, I will continue to present my work in progress at conferences in Asia and the United States.
