The antibiotic and inhibitor specificities of an ancient RND transporter from Haemophilus influenzae were identified. Two review articles and one research article were published. The main results were on the characterization of the multidrug efflux pump (AcrB) from H. influenzae (AcrB-Hi), which we compared to the most studied pump from E. coli (AcrB-Ec). The phylogenetically far removed AcrB-Hi could expel the same antibiotics and toxic compounds as the evolved and adapted AcrB-Ec, however, it could expel bile salts only weakly. Importantly, the AcrB-Hi efflux pump was uninhibited by an efflux pump inhibitor, which completely inhibits the activity of AcrB-Ec. We suggest that multidrug resistance is not an evolutionarily acquired ability, but has been present since ancient transporters.
