| 研究実績の概要 |
My goal for this research project was to visit necessary archives in Tokyo and Kyushu in order to complete the research necessary for my book manuscript. Due to disruptions arising from the pandemic, I was not able to make the trips to Kyushu I had planned to make this year. I have made progress on my research nonetheless. I presented research findings arising from my manuscript research at three international conferences or workshops. I submitted a new article to a major academic journal, where it is currently under review. And I completed and submitted a chapter on the 1870s for the forthcoming edition of the Cambridge History of Japan, a leading survey of modern Japanese history. To the extent possible, I was able to make significant progress on revising my book manuscript using ILL resources; I have made particular progress on revising Chapter 2 and adding a new Chapter 5 and Chapter 6.

理由
The coronavirus pandemic has significantly altered my research plans. My trips to archives Kumamoto and Tokyo have had to be delayed, and as a result, my research has not gone as quickly as expected.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
As soon as the public health safety allows, I plan to proceed with my archival trips to Kumamoto, Saga, and Kagoshima.

| 次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
As explained, the pandemic prevented me from undertaking the archival trips required for my research. I intend to take those trips as soon as the health situation allows.
