| 研究実績の概要 |
This academic year, I advanced my theoretical work on the idea of "history of the spirit" and the comparative dimensions of "counter-enlightenment" and on the problem of Christianity in the intellectual environment of Kumamoto; I gave presentations on these topics to help spur my thinking and research. I also followed a few research leads into the 1880s and dug more deeply into the history of women and terrorism in the political and social disorder of the "revolutionary era"; though empirically rather distant, these themes flow thematically from my original interest in the 1870s. Finally, I successfully submitted an article on the "history of the present" using interdisciplinary research methods and concepts that similarly arise from my work on the 1870s; publication is forthcoming.

理由
New findings have pulled my research in new directions, especially into the long legacy of the 1870s disruptions in Kumamoto across the next century. I have not presented these research findings yet. This opening of new dimensions of research (together with my relocation to a new workplace) has slowed the research process down (which is not necessarily a bad thing, of course).

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
I will visit archives abroad to dig more deeply into the history of the Western Academy of Kumamoto, and I hope to draft a stand-alone article on this topic within the next twelve months. I will also work more on the theoretical dimensions of the concept of "Counter-Enlightenment" and give two presentations at international conferences on this theme. If possible, I would like to write a theoretical article on this topic as well in preparation for my full book manuscript. I plan to branch out into using visual images and artwork as historical sources. And I intend to draw from new findings to expand my research into the long intellectual legacy of the Shinpuren into the postwar era.

I have not been able to go abroad for source-gathering yet; I intend to visit the United States for archival research next year.
