This research investigates the role of negative heritage preservation in rehabilitation strategies in depopulated areas within the Tohoku region. After the ease of Covid-19 related travel restrictions I was able to widen the reach of this research by including examples of negative heritage preservation in tourism in Hawaii. This comparative aspect highlighted the different challenges of regions facing a large influx of international tourists as "negative heritage" could lead to a negative image as compared to the Tohoku region and Fukushima Prefecture in particular, with almost no international visitors. Results of this research were introduced at various international and national conferences as well as international research journals.
I held student workshops and symposiums related to disaster memory and kataribe in tourism with LMU Munich and Freie Universitaet Berlin.
