| 研究実績の概要 |
This research aims to understand how local smallholders along the China-Myanmar-Laos border respond to market-oriented processes (China's rapid emergence), to both track and interpret the dynamics and transitions in their livelihood and land use, and to compare and discuss the differentiation and concordance with similar cases through in-depth fieldwork. In the first year, the main research achievements are as follows.
1. For theoretical consideration, this research explored how to explicitly describe, track and interpret the structure and dynamics of land systems in borderlands. By mainly focusing on the literature in the China-ASEAN borderland (this borderland is primarily referred to as including China, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam terrestrially), this research combines various dimensions in order to grasp the overall picture of land system dynamics in borderlands in the context of multiple, multi-scale, and multi-directional interactions.
2. For analysis of case studies, the research already completed the analysis on the important issues including land rental practices in a multi-ethnic rural society, agrarian transformation due to crop booms in a lowland village in China, and the features of agricultural investments in the China-Myanmar-Laos borderlands.
3. For international academic exchange, the Principal Investigator (PI) has already presented his work in several seminars and workshops and discussed with the relevant scholars in Vietnam, Taiwan and mainland China.
4. For publication, two paper has been accepted for publication in Problemy Ekorozwoju and Land Use Policy.

理由
First, the PI planned to conduct fieldwork along China-Myanmar-border in January of the first year. However, due to the outbreak and spreading of coronavirus, the former plan has been cancelled. The PI decided to do more fieldwork in the second year.
Second, because of the virus issue, the PI focused on the analysis of existing relevant literature and case studies. So far two papers got accepted and published. Much analysis and writing work is still going on well.
Third, the PI has discussed and presented his ideas in some seminars and workshops and also started cooperation work in his study area.
Therefore, based on the above reasons, this research grant has slightly delayed than it was originally planned and expected.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
The plans for the research scheme in the second year are as follows.
First, the PI plans to conduct intensive interviews with local smallholders, investors, traders, and other key informants to investigate the impacts of Chinese-led agricultural investments on local rural societies along China-Myanmar-Laos border once the situation gets better.
Second, the PI will focus on wrapping up data analysis, draft the outcomes for publication in peer reviewed journals and will present at international conferences.
