研究実績の概要 |
A series of observations with the 8.2-m Subaru telescope were carried out in FY2020. Although the observations suffered from severe weather issues, several early-phase Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) were successfully discovered and follow-up observations were carried out via international collaborations. In addition, a few more early-phase SNe Ia were found by related transient surveys in Japan and one object shows very peculiar properties. With the large number of early-phase SNe Ia discovered in FY2020, the long-standing progenitor and explosion issues of SNe Ia can be further investigated. Moreover, interesting transients other than early-phase SNe Ia have also been discovered. Currently several scientific papers focusing on different transients found by Subaru are in preparation.

理由
Although we experienced extremely poor observing conditions during the Subaru observations in 2020, a promising number of early-phase SNe Ia and other kinds of transients have been successfully discovered. By combining the current sample with early-phase SNe Ia discovered in the upcoming observations, further understandings of the progenitor system and explosion physics of SNe Ia can be achieved through statistical analysis. Furthermore, several scientific papers based on data taken from the previous Subaru observations are in preparation, indicating the great advantage of carrying out not only early-phase SNe Ia but also other transient-related studies through our project. More scientific outputs can be expected once the scheduled observations are successfully carried out in FY2021.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Given the great advantage of studying transients with Japanese wide-field survey facilities, we plan to keep carrying out survey observations with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam to study the progenitor and explosion physics of the SN Ia. At the meanwhile, joint observations with new observing facilities mounted on the 1.05-m Kiso Schmidt and 3.8-m Seimei telescopes are in preparation, which are designed to study transients that show distinct variance in hours, minutes, or even seconds ("fast transients"). The origin of fast transients are still under debate and we expect to find dozens of fast transients in a few years. The great number of early-phase SNe Ia and fast transients discovered in the upcoming years will make our team a leading role of carrying out related studies in the world.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a small amount of expenses incurred in FY2020. In FY2021, most of the grant will be used to carry out on-site/remote observations and purchase computer and accessories for processing a large amount of data taken from upcoming observations. Publications for scientific papers also need to be supported by the grant. In addition, given that the COVID-19 situation is getting better in many places, travel expenses could be expected in FY2021.
