研究実績の概要 |
Overall, the project is on a very successful path. Sample acquisition in collaboration with the University of Washington was successful. The newly acquired surface sediment samples include two samples from the oxygen minimum zone on the continental shelf of Baja California and one sample from the Cascadia Basin adjacent to the Washington margin. Sample processing at ETH Zurich and JAMSTEC have been successful and work is in progress to acquire amino acid specific radiocarbon data. Initial chromatographic investigations indicate that the samples contain abundant amino acids and the sample preparation (including desalting) have been successful. New collaboration with DTU (Denmark Technical University) has been successfully initiated and data on clay microstructure of direct importance for the project objectives has been generated. These investigations have included X-ray microCT analyses in preparation for more detailed investigations that are scheduled at SPring-8. Publications have been forthcoming including a methods paper of direct relevance for the measurements being carried out now. With the successful publication of this work, ideas on publishing an existing amino acid 14C dataset are being considered. In summary, field work, laboratory work, collaborative work, and publishing of research results are all on track and successful.
