In the past year, we studied the effect of phase contrast on the fatigue behavior of tough and self-healing polyampholyte (PA) hydrogels. We found that with a strong phase contrast, the stress singularity around the crack tip is gradually eliminated with the fatigue cycle, suppressing the fast crack growth; while stress concentration always exists in weak phase contrast samples, resulting in weak fatigue-resistance. The clarified role of mesoscale structure on fatigue resistance provides design principles for developing self-healing, tough, and fatigue resistant soft materials. In addition, we also used hydrogels to achieve dynamic memories with spontaneous but learning-strength-dependent forgetting ability by using nonequilibrium structure transformation, in analogy to the human brain.
