A Bloch surface wave (BSW)-based coherent light source and associated waveguide are proposed as an on-chip sensing scheme making use of BSW high confinement near the structure/air interface as well as BSW small propagation losses. We have designed and fabricated the on-chip optical sensor comprising integrated coherent light sources and bus waveguides on a dielectric multilayer and obtained guided BSW modes. So far, lasing has been achieved with a 0.2 nm bandwidth, and the propagation length of the guiding mode was 80 microns. The sensing ability of the device based on the change in the effective index of the lasing mode in the presence of analytes produces a wavelength shift of 0.17 nm. The scheme requires further optimization to realize on-chip high-throughput optical sensors.
