| 研究実績の概要 |
We were able to collect materials on the use of POW camps and the memorialization of POWs, to publish several papers, and to begin work on two journal specials, and to hold an international conference on memory of WWII.
Assisted by a research assistant, we collected materials and conducted fieldwork primarily in our local regions.
The secondary researcher published the second edition of a Japanese translation of a rare Canadian POW's diary of life during WWII in Thailand.
The primary researcher published a paper and began work on a co-edited publication on Memory on the Asia-Pacific War that will be published in early 2022, and on a journal special on War and Modernization in Kyoto. Both specials feature papers on POWs and travel.

理由
Due to the COVID pandemic, we have not been able to travel abroad (to Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, etc.) as planned. Instead, we focused on POW-related sites in Japan, especially in Kyoto. As this required dealing with a lot of materials in prewar Japanese materials that are difficult for us to read, we employed a research assistant. As it has become easier to travel recently, we plan to travel to Australia in the near future, and then to other countries afterward.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
Due to the pandemic, we have so far shifted the focus of our research from POW-related sites in the Asia-Pacific to sites within Japan. This has enabled us to delve deeply into sites here. However, in order to compare these to other sites and see how they are part of a larger network of sites in the Asia-Pacific, in the near future we plan to do fieldwork sites in Australia (Cowra, Loveday, etc.), Hawaii, New Zealand, and Thailand. The research assistant will continue to translate Japanese materials for a forthcoming English translation.
