研究実績の概要

To achieve research purpose of understanding and predicting the distribution of
sewage markers in Tokyo coastal area after rainfall events, studies were conducted using multiple approaches. In this year, we conducted multiple water sampling campaigns to collect data under real situation. Results from monitoring surveys were published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research journal.

Later, laboratory experiments were conducted at the University of Tokyo and National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) to understand mechanisms and factors that dominate removal of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) in coastal water, as one of target sewage markers. Their biodegradation and photodegradation kinetics were obtained through the experiments. These kinetics will be applied to the 3D water quality model in order to establish PPCPs fate model. Preliminary results of model analysis were presented at Water and Environment Technology Conference.

理由

In this fiscal year, research work was conducted using several approaches including water sampling in Tokyo coastal area and laboratory experiments at the University of Tokyo and National Institute of Environmental studies (NIES). Despite COVID-19 situation, all purposes were achieved within the fiscal year without delay.

Overall results from experiments are acceptable and can be applied to the next state of the research, which is a water quality model simulation. Furthermore, we obtained a large dataset from surveys and these data can be used for model verification.

今後の研究の推進方策

In previous year, lab-scale experiments were conducted in order to obtain biodegradation and photodegradation kinetics of PPCPs. Experiments were designed to imitate situation after CSO events specifically and water samples were collected from the study area to be used in the experiments. The kinetics were obtained successfully.

In this fiscal year, I will introduce the use of 3D water quality model to understand and predict fate of CSO pollutants. I will continue to use those kinetics obtained in last year to develop PPCPs fate model in Tokyo coastal area. In addition, I am using the model to reproduce E. coli concentration in the Odaiba seaside park under different scenarios to create a large database. This database can be used to predict the water safety in Odaiba seaside park for swimmers. Different scenarios include different rainfall categories considering total precipitation, rainfall intensity, rainfall spatial distribution an
d rainfall duration. Also, different tidal phase and tidal change condition. The magnitude and duration of E. coli contamination in Odaiba seaside park is expected to be in varied under spring and neap tide conditions, as well as, under ebb tide or flood tide.

Regarding publication, I expect to publish two papers about PPCPs fate model and E. coli concentration database in Odaiba seaside park.
