研究実績の概要 |
Because of the pandemic, almost all conferences scheduled for 2020 were canceled or postponed - thus, I was only able to attend one seminar which was held online in September 2020 (Conversations with World Philosophies, jointly organized by ALAFI and ENOJP), where I presented on the topic of “Rethinking nature, rethinking humanity”. I published one peer-reviewed article: “From the grain of rice to the single truth: The ontology of human existence in Ando Shoeki’s philosophy”, in Annals of “Dimitrie Cantemir” University - Linguistics, Literature and Methodology of Teaching, Vol. XIX, No. 1/2020. I finished the editorial work on a book I co-edit: Asian Philosophical Texts and Their Discontents (provisional title), scheduled for publication from Mimesis International for summer 2021.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
Staying at home under lockdown has allowed me to focus on my research, as I had more time to read, reflect, and write. In addition to one co-edited volume, I have almost finished work on a monography on Ando Shoeki, which will most likely be published next year. Working online, I have made contact with researchers with similar interests from Africa, Central and South America, and the US. Together, we have started an online study group focusing on nature and environmental ethics. We meet regularly (once a month), share our research results, exchange ideas and information, and debate various philosophical issues. This has helped me expand my perspective and gain new insight into the main topic of my project.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The main objective for 2020 was to examine various understandings of the concept of “self” as it appears in the works of premodern Japanese philosophers, from Dogen and Kukai to Ando Shoeki and Ninomiya Sontoku. In 2021, my focus will be on the way in which the concept of Nature changed and developed over the years within Japan. More specifically, I will attempt to pinpoint the moment when jinen became shizen and the perspective on nature changed from ‘a sum of component parts’ to ‘an all-inclusive whole’. Also, I plan to carry out a collaborative research project with a fellow philosopher from Colombia, on the relationship between self and nature within the frame of environmental ethics.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was unable to travel anywhere, as most conferences were either canceled or postponed. Therefore, I could not use any of the funds budgeted for travel expenses or miscellanea.
