研究実績の概要 |
I focused on the second step of the research project, analyzing the concept of nature (shizen) in pre-Edo period Japanese philosophy. I continued my investigation of Ando Shoeki and Ninomiya Sontoku, but also started examining the works of Meiji thinkers such as Edo Tekirei and Minakata Kumagusu, trying to identify the ideological and philosophical tenets of their ecological thinking. To publicize the results if my research, I published one peer-reviewed translation article about Shoeki's view of nature and language. Also, I co-edited (with Takeshi Morisato) a new volume in the Asian Philosophical texts book series.

現在までの達成度 (区分)
3: やや遅れている
理由
The main reason for the delay is the ongoing pandemic, which has made it extremely difficult to do fieldwork, attend conferences etc. To a certain extent, it has also affected access to certain materials such as rare manuscripts. The second reason is the change in my institutional affiliation, which was decided in the second half of the year, and which involved a considerable amount of unforeseen effort (preparing for relocation, creating new syllabi etc.).

今後の研究の推進方策 |
My provisional conclusion after the first two steps of the project is that - simplifying - self IS nature for many philosophers. What I want to do next is investigate the possible consequences and ramifications of this way of thinking. Therefore, the most important objective for the last year of this project is to see how and what Japanese philosophy can contribute to the global discussion of environmental ethics, deep ecology etc. I plan to show that many of the tenets of deep ecology, for example, are already present in nuce in the works of some Edo period philosophers. As for publicizing the results of my research, I hope to publish at least one peer-reviewed article, and the monograph on Ando Shoeki.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the pandemic, trips for fieldwork and conferences were not possible. The restrictions are being relaxed now, so I hope to be able to travel for research again.
