研究実績の概要

I will summarize the first year achievements in two categories. Publishing: The Principal Investigator (PI) published a research article about the effects of study abroad in a peer-reviewed international journal. Also, both CIs published articles or books related to vocabulary learning. Presentations: The PI gave academic seminar online at Birkbeck, University of London regarding how study abroad affects learners' communicative competence.

理由

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, our plans to begin data collection were necessarily delayed. The goals of this study are to measure the effects of extended study abroad on learners' vocabulary and lexical diversity, but because none of our expected participants have been able to leave Japan as planned, we need to wait to collect pre-departure data until later in 2021 at the earliest.

今後の研究の推進方策

Our plans for Year 2 of the study are to: 1) decide upon final instrumentation for measuring vocabulary and lexical diversity; 2) measure these attributes for around 50-60 students in the PI's university department before they leave for extended study abroad in 2021; and 3) compile and analyze results from this initial data.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

There was a surplus for the 2020 fiscal year for three reasons. First, the outbreak of COVID-19 prevented us from carrying out data collection and the expenses related to that, including creation of necessary instrumentation. Also, because we did not not collect data from participants, we did not pay them a participation fee. Finally, we were unable to travel to conferences as planned.
