研究実績の概要 |
1. The Ethical Review Board at KIT approved the data collection process. From October 1 - December 9, 2020, the proposed online project between KIT (Kitami Institute of Technology) students and students at a university in Canada was carried out successfully as planned and data was collected. Data from students who did not give consent for their data to be used will be excluded from data analysis. Data analysis has begun and is in the initial processes. 2. A journal article supporting identification theory and the importance of role models (directly related to JSPS Grant No. 20K00769) was written by the principal investigator and will be published in the Journal for the Psychology of Language Learning in June 2021. The support of JSPS was acknowledged in the Funding section of the article.

理由
I had planned for the project (online cultural exchange) to take place in 2021. But the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation resulted in online classes (instead of the usual face-to-face classes) taking place in both Japan and Canada, as well as the cancellation of all exchange trips to other countries. Because of these extenuating circumstances, the teacher of the student in Canada requested a 2020 exchange. I agreed and it proceeded well.
However, data analysis is going very slowly at the moment because of teaching obligations and other responsibilities.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I will be able to undertake data analysis in detail this summer. After data analysis, I plan to write one or more papers based on the results. The research plan has not changed much since it was first proposed. However, these 2 changes have occurred:
1. The initial proposal was written before COVID-19 broke out. I had planned to have a usual face-to-face class while the online exchange was going on. But all classes at my university changed to online classes. Students did not meet each other face-to-face as they usually do, and this may have affected how much identification occurred.
2. Because of the novelty of online classes, I also collected data related to online classes, for example, student preference for online or face-to-face classes. Results may be included in future articles.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
No travel was possible because of COVID-19 travel restrictions in Japan and internationally. When these restrictions are lifted, I will attend conferences again.
