研究実績の概要 |
Last year we were working on preparing the corpus in order to develop the word list. We have been digitalizing the texts required for the corpus. This has involved scanning, OCRing and cleaning the required texts along with working with our partner schools to ensure that the corpus we are compiling is reflective of the texts being used in the classroom. To date we have compiled text files for 74 of the 128 textbooks that we have identified for inclusion in the corpus. We have also started cleaning and processing the files. Following the procedure identified by previous studies in the field (Green & Lambert, 2018; Greene & Coxhead, 2015) this includes checking the text files for errors that may have occurred during the OCR process, removing page numbers, headings, captions for figures, and tables. We have also begun to process the files in order to identify words for inclusion in the corpus. Following the methodology of previous studies, this includes lemmatizing and tagging the text files for POS using the Stanza package for Python, which uses the Stanford CoreNLP program for processing the texts. We have started a small pilot project with texts from the Mathematics corpus to test the reliability of these tools for processing, tagging, and identifying the frequency of words in the texts that will be used for the corpus. When this has finished, and we have completed compiling the texts, we will begin to process the entire corpus in order to identify words for inclusion in the word list.

理由
The creation of the corpus has been progressing as planned and we met the deadlines that we set in our proposal last year. We are on track to meet most of the deadlines set for this year. However, there is a chance that the trialing of the list with our partner schools may be difficult due to the current situation with COVID-19. If this situation is resolved and we are able to go to the classrooms in the fall, we will be able to meet the deadlines set for this year. However, if that is not possible, we may have to propane trialing the list until next year.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
This year our goal is In order to continue with the development of the word list and assessment tools that meet the vocabulary needs of EAL learners. Our goals for this year are twofold , to: (i) finish developing the corpus along with an EAL specific word list (ii) to use the words that we have identified in the corpus to create a vocabulary assessment designed for EAL learners and to pilot this assessment at partner schools. We plan on finishing the corpus by scanning the remaining texts that we have identified as core EAL textbooks in our previous study. After doing this we will be finished analyzing this corpus using: the Stanford CoreNLP to lemmatize the texts tag for parts of speech; a number of Python scripts that will allow us to measure the words for frequency and distribution within and across the various texts; Python to consider word families, multiword items, and to deal with words found in more general lists (e.g. NGSL and NAWL). After developing the word list we aim to use it along with a set of assessment procedures we have piloted in our previous research to see if we can identify the degree to which the EAL-VLT can predict EAL learners’ academic proficiency.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
During the previous year we were not able to travel to our partner schools for the purpose of working with the teachers to check and validate the word list. This year, if the situation with COVID-19 permits, we will be doing those in school assessments from the fall semester. We have been in contact with a number of research assistants who are able to assist us with this process so we will be able to conduct the research that requires an in-person assessment, that we planned for the previous year, in the fall semester of this year. This means that the funds remaining from the last year will be used to pay for travel to the schools and for a RA to help conduct the assessments with the EAL participants.
