| 研究実績の概要 |
The nature of this research project requires the researchers to be in close proximity with subjects and precludes the use of masks in order to observe and demonstrate the articulation of vowels. This raised major safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic as it unfolded and information was limited, therefore, we decided to delay the start of the experimental phase of this project until it could be carried out in a safe maner. In order to make the best use of this time, we have been acquiring research materials and equipment in preparation for when we can safely recommence data gathering. The delay has given us an opportunity to focus more time on background research and preparing equipment and systems to ensure a smooth start to the experimental phase.

理由
As stated above, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out just before the commencement of the grant for this research project. There has been great uncertainty about how to deal with the crisis, and guidelines from MEXT and our university about social distancing make it difficult to conduct the experimental phases of this project, so we decided to delay the start of the experimental phase of this project due to safety concerns. We now have a better understanding of COVID-19 and what kind of measures are required to ensure the safety of participants. We are currently exploring the ways we can commence the experimental phase in a manner that will be safe for both the subjects and the researchers, such as using remote data gathering (e.g. video recordings), perspex shields, etc.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
As soon as we can ensure a safe environment for ourselves and our subjects, we plan to commence the experimental phase. The period of data gathering will probably need to be shorter than intended in order to make up for lost time. In the meantime, we will take advantage of the delay and continue background research, and practice using our equipment and systems in order to ensure a smooth start to the experimental phase when we can safely do so.

| 次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
We were unable to use travel expenses or personnel remuneration because of COVID-19 restrictions on travel and requirements for social distancing. Some article costs were set aside for purchase of safety equipment.
