研究実績の概要 |
Cross-sectional tests investigating the relationship between productive vocabulary knowledge and writing have been competed. To examine the claim that measures of vocabulary knowledge are good predictors of language skills, we compared different productive vocabulary knowledge (PVK) task scores with measures of lexical diversity (LD). Significant correlations were found between the LD and PVK measures. The findings suggest that vocabulary knowledge evolves along with writing proficiency. We have presented on this work at conferences in Japan and overseas.
The bulk of the first year of the project was devoted to an intervention study involving first-year university students. The experiment was designed to measure productive vocabulary scores and IELTS writing task scores before and after intervention in the form of vocabulary presented using Quizlet over the course of a semester. In each of the two rounds of task administration, students were presented with two IELTS-style essay tasks and given Lex30, G-Lex, and PVLT vocabulary tests. Analysis of the data is currently under way.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
Despite the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic, we were able to conduct the intervention experiment online and complete it successfully.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The next stage of the project will involve in-depth analysis of the data from the intervention experiment, with a view to determining the extent to which specific word learning impacts upon IELTS writing task scores. We intend also to begin investigating the relationship between particular lexical characteristics of learner texts (e.g. multiword sequences) and IELTS writing task scores.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
There is budget remaining from the previous year because, although the experimental work proceeded relatively smoothly, the coronavirus pandemic has made it necessary to postpone the enlistment and training of research assistants, along with the purchase of computers for data analysis. Also, due to the pandemic, we have not yet been able to use our allocated travel allowance.
This year, if the situation allows, to help with data processing and analysis we intend to enlist the support of three research assistants, for whom per diem payment will be required. We will need to purchase PCs and SPSS processing packages for these assistants to carry out their work. Also, it is hoped that the coronavirus situation will improve by the end of the year, and it will be possible to attend academic conferences both in Japan and overseas in order to present and discuss our ongoing research results, requiring budget for travel costs.
