研究実績の概要 |
I have completed a book chapter on non-state media reporting in Russia, that relates to my kakenhi project (included in the Routledge Handbook of Journalism, forthcoming 2021). I have also begun gathering research materials for two additional book chapters. I have presented my work on media freedom in Russia and Asia at the UK International Journalism Week conference (Sheffield University March 2021, online). In addition, I am co editing a book (with Noriko Murai and Jeff Kingston)on Heisei Japan, that will be published at the end of 2021 by Routledge. For this book I have written a chapter on the changing role of the Japanese prime minister in the Heisei period. This year I have also published a book chapter on journalism in Myanmar and a peer-reviewed article on populism in Russia.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
The covid-19 pandemic has prevented me from undertaking fieldwork in the UK and Russia this past year. However, I have been able to conduct research interviews via Zoom as a contingency plan. I have spoken with Russian journalists as part of my research on how the Russian media reports on international affairs.
I have made good progress on research and writing, completing research and some writing for two of the seven book chapters for my project. These chapters are on the topics of Russian media reporting of Japan and reporting on the UK.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
From September 2021 I will be on sabbatical for one year. During this period I have a research fellowship at Cambridge University where I will have access to the Russian media archives needed for my kakenhi research. I also plan (as proposed) to undertake fieldwork in Russia in the next year to conduct research interviews.I already have an extensive network of Russian media contacts from my previous research. I will also be presenting research talks at Cambridge.
In addition, I will be working on a peer-reviewed article on press freedom in Russia's regions and a book chapter on nationalism in Asia (Routledge Handbook of Nationalism in South East Asia). I will be attending an international conference on Asian Nationalism held in Dublin, Ireland in October 2021 where I am a keynote speaker.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
In the next year I will be on sabbatical in the UK and will incur costs for living and research. I have not used my research budget for 2020-2021 because of the pandemic and my inability to travel. I will therefore undertake additional travel for research and conferences in 2021-2022.
