研究実績の概要 |
Research progressed slower than expected this fiscal year. The pandemic made it impossible to travel overseas, thus limiting the study to more desk-based work, rather than fieldwork as initially planned. That said, more time in Japan in Fiscal Year 2020 allowed me to deepen my understanding of Japanese approaches to well-being. Two joint papers published with Japanese colleagues on the (i) relationship between well-being and pedagogy (Nishihira & Rappleye, 2021), and (ii) approaches to global engagement helped clarify the underlying philosophical approaches underpinning well-being in East Asia (Yano & Rappleye, 2021). Further collaborative project focused on the interface of pedagogical models and funding/policy mechanisms found in Japan (Kariya & Rappleye, 2020).

理由
The coronavirus pandemic has made it impossible to travel to other East Asian countries - Taiwan, Korea, and China. The timing was extremely unfortunate as Year 2 of this project was focused on traveling extensively to surrounding countries. To some extent, I was able to compensate for this by working on Zoom with colleagues in those countries, and concentrating more on desk based studies. However, there is no way to compensate for the inability to visit classrooms, interview teachers, and/or discuss with policy makers in those countries. I am hopeful that I can make up for time lost in the next year.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Several months ago I was awarded a 国際A grant, which will allow me to extend this work with leading scholars at Stanford University. I plan to do that work from August 2021 - March 2022. This collaboration with cultural psychologists will help me to refine experimental designs that I hope to later carry out in East Asian countries covered in the existing project (Taiwan, Korea, China). Most of my effort will be taken up with 国際A for the second half of the coming fiscal year. Nevertheless, it is difficult to plan beyond that, as I am not sure if I can travel to the East Asian countries within the next year. If I am still unable to travel, it may require a considerable shift in research design.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
I plan to utilize the remaining balance for this fiscal year in books and materials domestically (within Japan). If the coronavirus situation improves I will seek to conduct the research in Korea as planned (desk study, translation, systematic reviews). But if the situation does not improve, I will try to work online to carry out at least some of the research. It is worth noting that I was successful in acquiring the JSPS International A grant, which means most of the money for the second half of next fiscal year will come from that fund.
