研究実績の概要 |
(1) With the lifting of COVID restrictions, this project was able to be restarted with some degree of success in terms of research data collection and analysis in the field of service-learning. (2) Frequent contact via regular online discussion sessions and research focus-group sessions Dr. Billy O'Steen (UC Community Engagement Hub Director, University of Canterbury, New Zealand), other overseas institutions as well as interaction with universities in Japan through fieldwork visits meant depth of data collection was successfully achieved. (3) Domestic field-trips were made possible to the a number of universities in Japan (ICU, Sophia, Ehime, Kagawa universities) and overseas (McGill and Concordia Universities, Canada, and University of Canterbury, New Zealand) to conduct onsite observations of domestic-run programs. For the domestic trips, I was able to obtain an in-house Nanzan University research grant which meant that the Kaken-hi grant did not need to be used. However, due to the delays in 2021 and part of 2022 due to COVID, I have extended the Kaken-hi grant one year. (4) Material collected via online discussions, international and domestic visits and a thorough review of the up-to-date literature has been analysed and used to produce research output (a journal article) which is in-print for publication in June 2023.

理由
As explained above, the impact of the COVID and the resulting mobility restrictions regarding fieldwork activities and face-to-face interaction with the overseas institutions (University of Canterbury etc.) has meant that the overall plan execution has been delayed several months. However, with the loosening of restrictions from mid 2022, and with the extension of the grant by one-year, the research plan is on track to be successfully completed within the four year period, including the extension.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
As this is the final year of the project, I will seek to complete the following as per the original research project plan: (1) An overall analysis of the research findings to date that will published and delivered via a presentation at an international academic conference during the 2023 academic calendar--2024 Hawaii International Conference on Education <HICE> in January 2024. (2) The creation of a online service-learning resource webpage that includes all of the research findings to date (publications), recorded interviews with key stakeholders in service-learning education and references deemed useful for students interested in service-learning. (3) The running of a mini-symposium/workshop at Nanzan University between myself, Dr. Billy O'Steen (University of Canterbury Community Engagement Hub Director) and Japan-based researchers and educators in the filed of service-learning--November 2023.
