研究実績の概要 |
After a significant alteration of my research plan in FY2020 due to the coronavirus crisis, during FY2021 I have been able to resume my research on Diego Collado and the context of his activities and his works. First, I have presented some results of my research at four international conferences, two on the textual dimension of Collado’s works and other two on different aspects of the activities of the different religious orders in Japan in sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in which Diego Collado had a significant role. I have published an article with the edition and commentary of an unpublished and almost unknown document relevant to the activities of Collado in 1628, a peer-reviewed article on the attitudes of different religious orders on food and drink in Japan, revealing various important aspects of the disputes among Jesuits and mendicants, some of them lead by Collado, and another one, with a more general perspective, on the image of Christianity in seventeenth-century Japan in modern Japanese fiction. In FY2021 I have been finally able to travel to Spain, from January to mid-February, in order to visit several libraries and archives, and I have consulted important documents on which I am working now. These documents will shed a new light on Collado's works and on the context of his activities and works, especially regarding the conflicts between religious orders in Japan in seventeenth century, which will be the subject of future presentations and publications.

理由
Despite the delay in my research plan in FY2021 due to the coronavirus crisis and the impossibility of consulting the Spanish libraries and archives, during FY2022 I have managed to compensate it to a certain extent. Regarding the first dimension of the research project, that is, the edition of Collado’s works, the textual study of two of the most important ones, the Ars grammaticae Japonicae linguae and the Modus confitendi et examinandi, has progressed notably, and probably next year the complete text of these two texts will be ready to publish. About the second dimension of the project, the study of the context of Collado’s works, my visit this year to Spanish libraries and archives has provided me with important documents, some of them previously unknown, on some specific activities of the Dominican friar in Italy and Spain during his period as a procurator of the mendicant orders preaching in Japan at that time and on the disputes between Jesuits, Dominicans and Franciscans, particularly the parallel activities that Dominicans as Diego Collado and Franciscans as Diego de San Francisco were carrying out in the first third of the seventeenth century.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The next two years of the project have two clear objectives. On the one hand, after gathering all the documentary evidence on the textual history of Collado’s works, my intention is to complete a critical edition of his works, accompanied of a thorough annotation and a complete introduction with a new biography of the friar based on documents present in the Archivo Franciscano Ibero-Americano, the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, the Archivo Historico Nacional and other Spanish archives. On the other hand, the textual dimension of the project will be completed with a study on the circumstances and the context of Collado’s works. Specifically, in the next months I will take part in four international conferences with the following topis: Collado’s activities as a procurator of the mendicant orders active in Japan, his lobbying against the Jesuits between 1625 and 1634, the Jesuit writings on confirmation, a controversy between Jesuits and mendicants in the seventeenth century on the sacrament of confirmation, and finally, the use of Latin language in 16th and 17th century Japan. Regarding publications, the most immediate one will be the publication of a book next year in the publishing house Shunjusha with the annotated edition and translation, preceded by an introduction, of the aforementioned Jesuit writings on confirmation, written in collaboration with two other researchers, an extremely interesting document found in the Archivo Franciscano Ibero-Americano revealing an almost unknown episode of the rivalry between religious orders in Japan in the 17th century.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
My original plan was to have two research trips in FY2021, but, due to the coronavirus crisis, I have not been able to travel to Europe until February 2022. I have requested to transfer part of my FY2021 funds to FY2022 to carry out two research trips to Europe: one to visit Spanish libraries and archives and another one to disseminate the results of my research in international conferences.
