研究実績の概要 |
In the first half of the year I lay the foundations of my understanding of communism in East Europe in general and in Romania in particular. I reviewed the status of translation studies, focusing on topics such as translation under censorship, indirect translation, translation between two minor languages, etc. I also looked into previous research on socialist realism and cultural production under communist regimes in East Europe/ Romania, identifying similarities and differences. I conducted preliminary text analysis on several Japanese texts (especially poetry) translated into Romanian in the 1970s-80s, as well as the various translation studies discourses circulating during the same period. I was discussant for the panel "Japan and the Socialist Bloc during the Cold War: Translating Cultures," (AAS-in-Asia; Sept. 2020), commenting on the networks of cultural translation and circulation between Japan, China and the USSR. I also gave a talk titled "To Sketch, to Depict, to Describe: Realism and Translation in Early 20th Century Japanese Literary Theories" as part of the panel "(Re)translations: The Challenges of Translating Modern Japanese Literary Theory" (AAS, March 2021).

3: やや遅れている
理由
Due to the Covid19 pandemic, I was unable to travel to Romania and conduct archival research at public and university libraries. I also had to postpone my documentation trip to the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center at Hokkaido University. Furthermore, several conferences were canceled, libraries in Japan were closed or restricted access, especially in the first half of 2020, and book deliveries from abroad were delayed. Under such circumstances, it was difficult to conduct my research according to the initial plan.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I plan to present my research on "Minor Exchanges: Japanese Literature Translated into Romanian during the Last Decades of the Communist Regime” at the "World Literature and the Minor" (5-7 May) conference organized by KU Leuven. I will also talk about "The Paradox of Socialist Realism: Japan and the Orient as (Improbable) Tropes in Romanian Historical Fiction" at the "Impossible Fictions" (Oct.27-30) conference organized by U. of Chicago. If the ongoing Covid19 situation allows, I will travel to Romania in August or September 2021 and visit public and university libraries to gather materials about my research. I will also carry out my postponed visit to the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, to look into their archives and establish useful contacts with researchers working on the same area.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the Covid19 pandemic, I was unable to travel to Romania and Hokkaido to conduct archival research, which resulted in total expenditure being lower than initially planned in fiscal year 2020. I intend to carry out the delayed research trips to Romania and Hokkaido this fiscal year (2021), using up the carried over amounts. As I could not travel to archives and libraries, I also postponed the acquisition of a printer-scanner in 2020, and will purchase it this fiscal year.
