| 研究実績の概要 |
Work on the project has progressed in accordance with the schedule. There were two objectives for FY2021:
(1)「Archival research into the letters and manuscripts relevant to the primary sources identified in FY2020」： Continued travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic meant that visits to international archives were not possible. However, the principal investigator (PI) was able to access high-quality digital scans of some needed manuscripts and rare first editions by making use of databases provided through organizations such as Gale Cengage and The Internet Archive. In addition, PI was able to purchase published critical editions of letters by Stevenson and Barrie. This research will help allow for greater efficiency when it eventually becomes logistically possible to visit archives in Europe and the United States.
(2)「Publication of results in high-impact peer review journals」： Articles submitted for peer review in FY2020 were published this year. In addition, PI was commissioned for two more high-impact articles, gave two presentations of his research, and secured a book contract with Oxford University Press (details below).
By the conclusion of FY2021, a solid groundwork of research and materials had been achieved, ensuring smooth and effective continuation of the project into FY2022.

理由
The project is progressing rather smoothly. It remained logistically challenging and impractically expensive to travel for research during FY2021, so PI focussed on continuing existing research and finding new directions for the project using available materials. Notably, PI was lead author on a proposal for a new critical edition of George MacDonald’s short fiction, developed in collaboration with Dr Joshua Richards (MidAmerica Nazarene University). The proposal was accepted by Oxford University Press as part of the Oxford World’s Classics series and is now under contract: publication is scheduled for 2024. Additionally, PI completed editing a collection of academic essays for the Association of Scottish Literature and delivered the completed manuscript: it is currently in production and scheduled for publication in 2022.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
In FY2022, the main emphases will be (1) preparation of texts for the OUP edition of MacDonald’s short stories, (2) completion of two peer-reviewed articles and submission of others as possible, and (3) developing a monograph proposal on the subject of the project for submission to a major academic publisher. This is consonant with the proposed schedule. In addition, PI will continue to seek opportunities for collaboration with colleagues in Japan and internationally.
The travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic mean that the project is running significantly under budget. Thus, funds have been reallocated to hire two part-time workers for FY2022: one dedicated to bibliographic work for on the OUP edition and the other providing general assistance to PI. Funds will also be spent on books and high-quality scans of archival materials. PI will consider planning an international research trip for FY2022 as travel restrictions are lowered and the health risk improves.

| 次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The amount was mostly allocated for international travel in FY2020 and FY2021, which has been unavoidably cancelled and/or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These funds will be reallocated to fund additional part-time workers to assist with the project. It will hopefully be possible to travel internationally for archival research in FY2022.
