The project has successfully achieved its goals. There were three objectives planned for FY2022: 1. Conclusion of archival research. The lifting of COVID-19 travel restrictions in Japan and the UK meant it was at last possible to undertake the archival research which was a central plank of this project. From 11-19 September, the project leader visited key archives in the UK, most importantly the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. He viewed rare first editions of George MacDonald's books to help establish an authoritative text for the new critical edition of MacDonald's short fiction. He also viewed manuscripts, letters, and notebooks by Robert Louis Stevenson. 2. Preparation of proposal for an academic monograph. The project leader completed plans for a monograph based on this research. The richness of archival material clarified that Stevenson should be the primary focus of the monograph. The project leader thus reread Stevenson’s key texts and major secondary literature, developed a coherent structure for the monograph, and identified its distinctive features in relation to existing Stevenson scholarship. The proposal was completed and revised in a timely manner. 3. Submission of proposal to major European or US academic publisher. The proposal has been submitted and is currently undergoing review at a major UK publisher. FY2022 also saw publication of an edited volume, as well as completion of several articles and international presentations. Work continues on preparation of the scholarly edition of MacDonald and development of the proposed monograph.
