| 研究実績の概要 |
The sound change mechanism is not a fresh topic. However, it is still a matter of major debate since different theories hold contradictory views. Although most previous studies simply ignore the leading words in sound changes and exceptions to sound changes, the present study pays attention to them. The reason is that the leading words in a certain sound change and exceptions to it are the two extreme ends of the sound change. A comparison between leading words and exceptions present valuable hints concerning factors in sound changes. Another important feature of my study is that sound changes focused on here all spanned several hundred years and can present significant details in their whole processes. This makes a detailed modeling of them possible.

The present study consists of three phases. The plan for Phase I is as follows.
Phase I: gather data, analyze the palatalization process and the Middle Chinese Great Vowel Shift (The year of 2020)
Two papers based on research for Phase I have been finished and submitted.

Phase II: gather data, analyze the Great Vowel Shift in Middle English, and compare it with the palatalization process and the Middle Chinese Great Vowel Shift (The year of 2021)
In 2021, the present study will focus on Middle English Great Vowel Shift, and compare it with Mandarin Vowel Shift. The final aim is to further the understanding towards the sound change mechanism.

The upshot of this study will be submitted to academic journals, presented at conferences both home and abroad, and made open to the public through the internet or other possible media.
