研究実績の概要 |
The purpose of the study is to explore if meditation has the potential to improve foreign language teaching at the university level. The first year of this project went smoother than initially planned, because I could not only finish analyzing the collected data, but I also published several papers, one of them in a leading international journal of the field (Language Teaching Research). I also presented my findings at two conferences. In addition, I was invited as a guest-speaker to a podcast. Meditation exercises were implemented for a period of one year and data was collected on students’ academic achievement, measures of mindfulness, and evaluations of the meditation exercises. Results revealed that classes that did the meditation exercises showed marked signs of academic achievement and increased awareness relative to the class that did not meditate. There were also differences between the two meditation methods in terms of distinct aspects of mindfulness. Furthermore, the students evaluated their experience with the meditation exercises very positively.

理由
My initial plan for the first year was to complete the analysis of my collected data and publish a blue-print. I exceeded these goals, because I could publish several papers, one of them in a top journal in the field. This was earlier than expected. In addition, I held presentations about the topic at two conferences. Although the initial plan to present at an international conference in Copenhagen was impossible due to the Covid-19-pandemic, I managed to present at two conferences in Toyama (online) and Tokyo (online). In addition, I was invited as a guest-speaker to the Podcast "Lost in Citations". This was a great opportunity to promote my research not only to the scientific community, but also reach a wider audience. Through this podcast, I have received many messages from language teachers around the world.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I am currently in contact with other researchers who combine mindfulness with foreign language learning and teaching. We have started to create an international network and we are going to connect with experts all around the world at top-leading research institutions and striving to create a conference. For an even deeper understanding of the promising results until now, I will conduct a study which looks at the direct relation between language learning and mindfulness. To do so, I am currently designing a more specialized study as well as analyzing data on the acceptance of meditation exercises in the foreign language classroom. It is planned to publish a new original research paper and present new findings at a conference in Tokyo.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the Covid-19-pandemic, the "International Conference of Mindfulness" in Copenhagen, Denmark, was cancelled and postponed to an unknown date. Therefore, no international travel expenses were incurred. Further, both national conferences in Toyama and Tokyo were held online. If the international travel restrictions due to the pandemic are lifted, I plan to attend two international conferences within the next fiscal year to present my research.
