This research project utilized a mixed-method approach with a qualitative explorative study and a quantitative theory-testing study, to investigate a relatively new and unexplored research topic: expatriates’ boundary spanning activities, and their implications for the interpersonal relationships in foreign subsidiaries and between headquarter (HQ) and subsidiary relationships of multinational companies (MNCs). This project developed and validated a novel theoretical framework on the double-edged effects of expatriates’ boundary spanning in the global context. The theoretical framework for expatriates’ boundary spanning is embedded in the context of MNCs, foreign subsidiaries, and expatriate-host-country employee interactions, rather than boundary spanning in a universal sense, therefore contributing context-specific support to the boundary spanning literature. One paper has been published in the International Journal of Human Resource Management, and another is currently undergoing the third round of revise and resubmit process at the Journal of International Business Studies.
