研究実績の概要

This project aims at understanding the impact that AI technologies used in schools have on teacher-users. Analysis of surveys and interviews conducted this year with over 100 teachers who used intelligent robots (Pepper) in Japanese schools shows that most teachers who were dissatisfied with this technology lacked coding skills. Other factors that influenced teachers' adoption of Pepper were age and speciality. Findings indicate that teachers aged 40 and younger and teachers specialised in STEM-related fields are likely to feel less discomfort using such technologies. Upon closer scrutiny, the data analysis indicates that age may be in fact be a marker for experience with computer coding, as younger teachers were more likely to have code learning opportunities, thus age is a factor less important than coding literacy. The information collected from 23 city education boards about the number of Peppers allocated to schools, which has halved, suggests that a system of quantification is needed for rational placement of such machines in schools. The study created a Python program that, based on the conclusions derived from preceding analysis, predicts teacher anxiety levels and recommends an optimum number of robots for each teacher.

理由

Despite numerous and serious setbacks (the current unforeseeable circumstances, the uncooperative attitudes of some city education boards and schools, the travelling difficulties), this research progress is not hampered. The research plan suffered some inevitable changes, given the restrictions imposed at national and international level, however, equally good or better plans were put in place and there is smooth and steady progress.

今後の研究の推進方策

The study plans to develop an AI application that, on a high-level perspective, will aid teachers who teach using Zoom to easily monitor attendance, attentional state and mood of students. This application will be tested by a number of teachers and/or faculty who will later be surveyed on the usefulness of the application and ways to improve it.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

In order to develop the AI application according to the plan and in line with the study objectives, collaborations are needed: one with an AI scientist specialised in image processing and another with ML / data engineer who can help analyse the data and identify patterns. The investigator's knowledge of AI is still low and further study is needed using books, online courses and the help of specialists. Softwares and devices that can facilitate the development or improvement of the application may be needed too.
