The purpose of this research is to develop a numerical model that reflects the biological mechanism behind the rupture of red blood cells. We have developed a method that takes into account the physical structure and connectivity of the cytoskeleton of the red blood cell membrane and validated against previous models of the red blood cell. We have also investigated the impact of adding rupture mechanics to the model and investigated how the model changes in response. Clarifying the biological mechanism behind red blood cell rupture could lead to advances in reducing or preventing anemia in patients that experience disturbed blood flow, such as those with implanted medical devices.
