研究実績の概要 |
New results have been obtained and the different research directions are converging toward a common conclusion. Again, experiments with groups have not been possible, but experiments on animal swarms were carried out helping to clarify how the environment may act on a collectively organized system. For humans, the LiDAR sensors installed to check potential preferences for a given entrance under different environmental conditions led to quite disappointing results. No significant statistical change was recorded when color, light or sound was used to induce behavioral changes. However, experiments with crabs helped clarify this aspect. It was found that swarm size amplify susceptibility to environmental conditions and medium densities are required for steering to be effective.

理由
Data collected from LiDAR sensors, although disappointing, are in line with the results from old experiments on crowds, confirming that a minimum density and interaction time is needed to lead to self-organization and steering to be effective. Also, experiments on crabs were rather successful and results were summarized in a conference paper. Experiments performed on VR also allowed strengthening the comprehension of the problem from an overall perspective and will be presented to an international conference. As such, unexpected successes are compensating for partial failures and, on overall, all single studies are helping getting a better idea of the topic investigated. The work on bees is also finally becoming reality with sensors to be installed soon, although limited in capabilities.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the final year the goal is to summarize all the single studies performed over the whole period and get final conclusions. Some additional experiments are needed for crabs to increase sampling number, although analytical methods are already developed and results can be obtained quickly. If possible, some material in ecological conditions would also help to understand how crabs react to light and, depending on restrictions, experiments with people are sought. In addition, results from the online survey performed in the first year were obtained, so publications will be written to present them. Also, works submitted for international conferences will be presented during this year. Finally, some exploratory investigation will be performed to seek potential directions for future works.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Expenses in the first year were particularly low due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the problematic involved in performing experiments with human participants or traveling to perform experiments with animal crowds (also traveling for conferences/seminar was difficult too). In the last year traveling was partially possible, but limitations still existed on experiments with humans. In this final year it is likely that experiments which had not been possible so far could be performed, thus requiring the unspent budget accumulated over the first two years (particularly in the initial year).
