Fabrication and characterization of a single-VO2-nanoparticle electronic nano-switch device

研究実績の概要

This project enabled the discovery of the nonlinear optical trapping of vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanoparticles and the possibility to directly control the nanoparticle motion using the optical torque created by the spin angular momentum of light. By converting spin angular momentum into orbital angular momentum, this unique phenomenon makes it possible to study microscale optomechanical spin-orbit interactions with potential applications to nanoparticle sorting techniques. Numerical simulations and experiments have been done to study of this newly discovered phenomenon. Two articles are under preparation, one about the phenomenon and its physical origin and another about the optical manipulation of VO2 nanoparticles using optical vortex beams carrying both spin and orbital angular momenta.
For the fabrication of opto-electronic nano-switching devices, a new fabrication method has been developed based on the laser-induced hydrothermal synthesis of VO2. Plasmon-assisted VO2 synthesis was demonstrated by coating resonant plasmonic gold nanoparticles with a thin VO2 nanolayer. The optoelectronic properties of the plasmonic nano-switching devices are under investigation. The results will be published in another article.
