A series of catenane molecules which could potentially act as two-way linkers are designed. The synthesis of such molecules, however, was highly challenging. Catenanes containing ethylene glycol units are reported in the literature, but the synthesis of analogous molecule with the functional group required in this work produced very low yield. The purification was also difficult due to the presence of by products with similar property. When longer ethylene glycol chain was introduced, the yield of the desired catenane was improved, allowing two target catenanes being successfully prepared. However, in this design rings are larger and the whole molecule becomes more flexible. These features led to the formation of amorphous precipitate more readily than single crystals.
