研究実績の概要 |
The researcher established a collaborative relationship with the Yamabushi temple of Shipporyu-ji (Inunakiyama mountain, Izumisano city, Osaka prefecture), as well as the educational and tourism organizations of said city. These stakeholders provided the researcher with valuable documents of the history and characteristics of Shipporyu-ji, as well as information on heritage protection policies, tourism policies and the guiding activities of the Yamabushi. Particularly relevant was the cooperation with the Yamabushi, who act as gatekeepers of the location and facilitated the researcher's activities in numerous occassions. Photographic and video material was also produced. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancelations of many conferences during 2020, preventing the researcher from participating in them as planned. However, the researcher participated in the following online conferences:
日本宗教学会・観光学研究会2020年: 「修験体験における山伏の役目」 CAUTHE 2021: "An analysis on the roles of religious guides: Japanese Shugendo as case study"
The preliminary data obtained during fieldwork and literature review was compiled into a book chapter titled "Micro-niche experiences in pilgrimage tourism: Shugendo; programs in Japan" for the book "Handbook of Niche Tourism", edited by Novelli, M., Cheer, J., Dolezal, C., Jones, A. and Milano, C., and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. The chapter intends to present Shugendo; experience programs to international audiences and discuss their tourism potential. The book is expected to be published during 2021.

理由
Currently, fieldwork is being finalised with the Yamabushi at Inunakiyama and data analysis has started. At the moment, two academic articles are being written to be submitted to academic journals. The articles have the provisional titles: "Service quality mechanisms of religious guides: An exploratory study from Japan" and Roles of religious guides in religious tourism: A qualitative study from Japan", following the research plan. As stated before, a book chapter is expected to be published this year. However, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have delayed both fieldwork and academic activities such as conferences. Particularly during 2020 many conferences were canceled and the Yamabushi at Inunakiyama stopped their guiding activities for most of the year. These external factors delayed fieldwork and academic activities. The researcher will expose his research in the following two conferences:
Euro- Asia Tourism Studies Association (EATSA) 2021: "Service quality mechanisms of religious tourism: An examination on Shugendo guides".
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage (IRTP) Conference 2021: "Reflecting on the guide roles of religious figures".

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The researcher will prioritize the completion of fieldwork and data analysis to write up the two academic articles and submit them to academic journals during FY 2021. Also, the researcher will continue exposing his research work in academic conferences and seminars.
Due to the unexpected delays and cancelations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020 and 2021, the researcher is considering requesting an extension of the Kaken'hi funding, in order to ensure that the grant is used according to the submitted research plan and to produce quality research achievements.
