研究実績の概要 |
This research will investigate the neural correlates of bilingual advantage using the fNIRS neuroimaging modality in Japanese university students of differing English proficiency. Because my research is "clinical" in nature, I created and submitted a lengthy application to the Institutional Review Board of the Faculty of Medicine, completed a training program to complete the process, and was officially certified as a "Clinical Researcher" by the Clinical Research Center. I have also purchased and optimized mobile devices and software for administration of the chosen English test. However, because of the ongoing worldwide semiconductor shortage, the provider cannot guarantee final delivery of the NIRS device until between January and March 2023. This has further delayed data collection.

理由
Because data collection is dependent upon meeting students in person, COVID restrictions have prevented me from beginning the experiment until now. In addition, the worldwide semiconductor shortage means that the manufacturer (NeU) cannot procure the necessary parts to complete the order of the necessary NIRS device. However, they have guaranteed delivery in the last quarter of FY2022, and I will apply the KAKENHI funds to purchase of the device and commence data collection at that point.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Provided that COVID restrictions do not preclude test subjects (students) from coming to campus, I will attempt a separate, related study to investigate prefrontal activity in response to an English expressive vocabulary test using a bare-bones, simplified NIRS device that I was able to purchase during FY2021 using remaining funds. This will serve as a sort of proof-of-concept for the full-fledged investigation that will be made possible once I obtain the full-device from the manufacturer.
