研究実績の概要 |
In 2021, my paper “Climate Policy and Wealth Distribution” was accepted for publication in Environmental Modeling & Assessment. I point out that under credit market imperfections and depending on wealth distribution across households, a balanced budget climate policy may widen the wealth inequality gap between the rich and poor. Climate policy may create positive effects on the wealth of households, but these effects are asymmetric across households in terms of both magnitude and the transmission of gains from a climate policy within households. The gains of the poor from a climate policy are mainly transmitted into improving living standards and the investment in human capital due to the higher marginal return to education investment. By contrast, the gains of the rich are transmitted biasedly into physical capital accumulation and thereby enhance their monopolistic position in the production of intermediate inputs. I show that, for any climate policy, there exists a corresponding threshold of aggregate physical capital. When the aggregate physical capital of the economy exceeds this threshold, the corresponding climate policy may widen the intergenerational bequest transfers among heterogeneous households, thereby contributing to widening the wealth inequality gap between the rich and poor.
In addition, I was awarded Osaka University Prize 2021 for my publication in the Journal of Population Economics. One of my paper in my KAKENHI project is developed from this important research. This achievement implies the correct direction of my current research.

理由
My KAKENHI start-up project started from October 2020 and was planned to finish by March 2022 with two research papers. One research paper was accepted for publication in Environmental Modelling and Assessment.
For the second one, I and my coauthors completed the most important theoretical part of the paper and we would like to provide empirical evidences to support our analytical results. We have some challenges in doing with data and need more time to guanrantee to complete the paper in the most appropriate pattern. That is the main causes for my slight delay.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I plan to finish the second paper entitled “The slow demographic transition in regions vulnerable to climate change” in this September. Then I will submit the paper to be considered for publication. The journal I target at is the International Economic Review, a top general journal in the science of economics.
If the time permits, I expect to generate the third paper, in which I cooperate with Prof. Vasilakis (Bangor University) and Ms. Hang Nguyen (3rd year PhD student in economics at Osaka University), on the interactions between life expectancy, wage gender gap, and environment to investigate the stagnation of Sub-saharan Africa.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Because of the pandemic during last two years, all conferences I attended were online. My coauthor also could not arrive in Osaka as planned. Therefore, we saved a significant amount. I returned a part of this amount and left some money for next academic year (FY2022) for possible conference, proofreading services, and journal submission fees.
