研究実績の概要 |
During the Academic Year 2023, our research team undertook a range of activities. First, collaborative meetings were conducted with a professor specialising in experimental design. These sessions led to substantial revisions of our experimental plan and the enhancement of our experimental tools. Second, the principal investigator embarked on a series of domestic trips and conducted fieldwork. The focus was on observing various hotel practices aimed at encouraging customer engagement in pro-environmental behaviours. Third, the principal investigator visited The University of Queensland and engaged in discussions with experts in sustainable tourism. This visit also included observations of tourist destinations in Australia, noting strategies to facilitate pro-environmental behaviours among tourists and locals. Fourth, we initiated data collection for our food waste experiment, supported by a hotel management company. The experiment is currently conducted across hotels in Hakodate, Karuizawa, and Naha, targeting both domestic and international tourists. Data on inedible waste from morning buffets is collected weekly by hotel staff and relayed to our team. The principal investigator and co-investigators conducted reciprocal visits in June, September, and December. These meetings were crucial for discussing project progress, resolving any issues, and strategising future steps of our project.

現在までの達成度 (区分)
3: やや遅れている
理由
The original timeline for completing the data collection phase of our experiment was projected to be significantly earlier. However, it must be acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the initial years of our project, imposed delays on our progress. Additionally, the intricacies involved in designing the experiment, especially concerning the intervention, process, and analysis plans, required more time than initially estimated.
Following extensive discussions and negotiations with our partnering hotel company, we commenced the experiment in February 2023. With these developments, we are now on track to complete the project by the end of Academic Year 2024.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Our team is focused on concluding the data collection phase of our experimental study. To ensure the effective implementation of our experiment, project members will conduct multiple visits to the three collaborative hotels where data collection is underway. In pursuit of meaningful outcomes, we are committed to garnering support from our Australian collaborators, as well as engaging with a broader network of scholars specialised in experimental methodologies, customers’ pro-environmental behaviours, and sustainable tourism. An integral component of our dissemination strategy includes presenting both preliminary and final results at various international conferences. Plans are in place to present initial findings at the APacCHRIE conference in Seoul in May 2024, followed by updated results at the TTRA conference in Thailand in December 2024, culminating with the presentation of our final results at the CAUTHE conference in Brisbane, Australia, in February 2025.
The team is scheduled to travel to Australia to reinforce collaborations and explore pro-environmental practices at other hotels. Additionally, the team intends to undertake domestic trips beyond the three collaborative hotels, aiming to deepen our understanding of current hotel practices and tourist behaviours related to pro-environmental actions. Upon completion of data collection and analysis, the team is poised to compose at least two journal articles, targeting publication in top-tier international journals, namely the International Journal of Hospitality Management and the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The initial years of this project were notably impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to significant disruptions in both domestic and international travel arrangements. This situation resulted in a portion of our allocated funds remaining unutilised. Despite concerted efforts to expedite the project's progress, the commitment of team members to additional tasks and obligations, including other projects, alongside the evolving circumstances of our collaborating hotel, posed challenges to advancing the project as originally envisaged. In response to these developments, there is a planned reassessment and revision of our strategies for Academic Year 2024. This will include the strategic reallocation of the unutilised funds to align with the revised project plans and objectives.
