Close collaboration with cultural psychologists at Stanford clarified alternative approaches to well-being found in Japan (and other parts of East Asia). Viewed from this perspective of difference, it became possible to view new global measurements (for example, the OECD's PISA 2015 results) as theoretically and culturally too narrow, rather than as indicative of Japanese or East Asia deficit. This central finding afforded a series of strong research results. Concretely, two joint papers have been published in leading Anglo-American journals of education (Journal of Education policy, Comp Ed), a contract was signed for a full-length book on the issue (Palgrave), and I was invited to present findings to members of the Central Council of Education (July 2022), UNICEF (September 2022), etc.
