研究概要

液体金属を用いた熱対流実験と数値シミュレーションを行い、レーリー数、外部磁場及び対流槽の回転速度によって、対流の様相がどのように変化するかを調べ、ダイナモ作用の原動力である地球中心核内の対流運動の活発さやエネルギー散逸量と、地表で観測可能な地球磁場とその変動との関係を見出した。本実験により外部磁場とレーリー数のある範囲内で熱対流パターンの不規則かつ自発的な逆転現象が発見されたことは、地球磁場の逆転の起源を解明する上で重要な進展である。
