研究概要

南極昭和基地と北極域アイスランドは1本の磁力線で結ばれた共役点ペアの位置関係にある。この利点を最大限に活用し、オーロラの形状や動きを同時観測し、南北半球間の対称性・非対称性の特性を研究した。オーロラは南北両半球でその形が似ている場合や全く異なる場合など様々であった。特に、オーロラ爆発の直前に出現するビーズ状オーロラ、オーロラ爆発、点滅する脈動オーロラ、渦状オーロラ、などに注目して南北半球の比較研究を行った。そして、それらオーロラの発生源と発生機構に関する貴重な手がかりを得ることができた。また、観測から得られた実際の共役点位置の時間・空間変動と惑星間空間磁場との関係を明らかにすることもできた。
