研究概要

Notchシグナルの主要関連分子のHes1は、角膜や眼球の形態発生において必要不可欠な役割を担っていることが解明された。また、Hes1は角膜上皮幹細胞、前駆細胞等に局所特異的に発現しており、分化した角膜上皮細胞には発現していなかった。遺伝子導入実験からその機能としては、細胞増殖を抑制して角膜上皮幹細胞を未分化状態に維持し、角膜上皮の恒常性維持機構に極めて重要な働きをしていることがはじめて確認された。
