In this project, we have established a technique for injecting surface acoustic waves (SAWs) through atomically thin ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layered van der Waals crystals and related heterostructure substrates transferred onto a piezoelectric LiNbO3 substrate to investigate magnetoelastic coupling.Using this technique, we have demonstrated for the first time the coupling of SAWs to antiferromagnetic layered crystals by injecting GHz surface acoustic waves (SAWs) into layered crystalline chromium trichloride (CrCl3). Antiferromagnetic spin wave modes can be excited below the Neel temperature in this layered antiferromagnet.
