研究実績の概要 |
Direct aqueous carbonation without CO2 purification and pressurization is promising route to reduce CO2 emissions and treat alkaline wastes simultaneously. Under this concept, the expensive and energy consuming CO2 purification and pressurization are not necessarily required. The alkaline byproducts from industries were screened. The suitable candidates identified through preliminary review were decided to carry out direct aqueous carbonation experiments. Because of the COVID-19, it was not able to visit the factory directly to collect samples of alkaline wastes and byproducts, I received samples by post. The experimental setup, including gas supply system and carbonation reactor system was prepared. The experimental data had been analyzed and evaluated by computer to determine carbonation mechanism and ion equilibrium. The preliminary results show that the direct aqueous carbonation without CO2 purification and pressurization was able to reduce CO2 emissions effectively. The carbonated wastes and byproducts were proved to be stabilized. The research findings were presented in oral at international conference, albeit in an online format due to COVID-19. Besides, the survey related to the generation of alkaline wastes and byproducts, and development of mineral carbonation technology was conducted, and the results were summarized.

理由
The project is progressing as planned. Direct aqueous carbonation experiments were investigated, and further analyses and evaluations had been carried out. The detailed reaction mechanisms were determined, and comprehensive considerations were assessed. The results are being summarized as a research paper submitted to an international academic journal. In addition, the results of the survey on the generation of alkaline wastes and byproducts and development of mineral carbonation technology are also summarized as a paper submitted to an international academic journal.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The second year’s research will proceed as planned. The plan will be divided into two parts. The first part is to submit and publish the summarized results of direct aqueous carbonation to international academic journal. The second part is to investigate the indirect carbonation without chemical consumptions. Indirect carbonation can obtain a high carbonation efficiency and high-purity products. Therefore, various alkaline wastes and byproducts can be utilized. However, the cost of chemicals and generation of waste solutions are the main gap for indirect carbonation. Therefore, the circular indirect carbonation of alkaline wastes and byproducts will be investigated in next step. The solution regeneration method will be applied into indirect carbonation process. Because this is innovative concept, the fundamental investigation will be conducted firstly. Based on the investigation, the comprehensive assessment with various aspect, including cost, CO2 balance, and energy scenario will be conducted.
