研究実績の概要 |
We evaluated the relative nitrogen (N)-to-phosphorus (P) requirements and phytoplankton stoichiometry using previous and current experimental data on multiple phytoplankton species. Results showed that relative N-to-P requirements for phytoplankton growth decreased as absolute nutrient levels increased. Thus, N may be crucial for enhancing phytoplankton growth under low nutrient conditions. This result applies to single species as well as species assemblages, which are independent of species shifts occurring along water N:P gradients. Besides, the dependency of phytoplankton N-to-P stoichiometry on cellular macromolecules (protein, RNA, and pigments) was evaluated, which demonstrated the prior role of N in protein synthesis and growth enhancement.

理由
In 2021, we have investigated the influence of trophic status on the relative requirement of N-to-P for phytoplankton growth, and explore the macromolecules basis of the phytoplankton N-to-P stoichiometry under axenic conditions. In addition, a preliminary investigation on the diversity of phytoplankton associated bacteria was conducted in 2021. Significant host-specific effects of phytoplankton on bacterial community were detected in some phytoplankton species (i.e. Microcystis spp.). This is the basis for the following research.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
First of all, we will continue explore the phytoplankton stoichiometry, especially with the presence of natural bacterial community. Additionally, we will compare the community compositions of bacteria associated with phytoplankton cells under different trophic statuses. Finally, we will try to evaluate the nutrient fluxes between phytoplankton and bacteria under different trophic statuses.
